There is nothing to equal the friendships of grade school.
I began my educational journey at St.Bridget’s Catholic School in North Minneapolis. When I was in first grade, Sr. Mary Clare’s class, I walked to school everyday with my two big brothers, Mark (in 8th grade) and Randy (sixth grade). We walked two long blocks and three short blocks to school in the morning, home for lunch and back for afternoon classes. St. Bridget’s was my whole world.
Many mornings, as I stand at the Bohland doors greeting the HCS students, I am reminded of my own grade school experience. When I see groups of neighborhood kids and small bunches of siblings I delight that Highland Catholic School is a K-8 school. The shared experience of school can strongly unite families and neighbors.
Last week, I received several memorial checks to honor a ’74 graduate of HCS, Mike Champion who died last month. Many of these gifts had wonderful notes acknowledging the grade school friendships that had withstood the test of time. One former classmate even provided the graduation photo for Mike’s class for our web page and photo display. It’s nice to have it here again.
So spend a moment thinking of your ol’ grade school classmates. Hopefully, you can do a little “googling” and get back in touch!
