Here is an overview of our plans for the coming weeks for K, 1, 2, and 4th grades.

Thank you for your support of this program.   Mrs. Engel

Kindergarten- Students have worked on a self portrait drawing as they get comfortable with the format. We will continue discussing color concepts including the color wheel, color groups- primary (red, yellow, and blue) and secondary (green, purple, and orange) as well as warm and cool colors. Students are trying to recognize these categories and how other colors are made from the primary groups. These concepts will also be studied and seen through the work of Abstract Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.

1st Grade- We are discussing the Iowan artist Grant Wood. Ask your 1st grader if they remember the name of the piece we are studying. We will be working on this artwork -step by step- for several weeks. Students will be presented with terms such as foreground, background, space, shape, and line using terms such as horizontal, vertical, and diagonal.

2nd Grade- We are discussing the Swiss Expressionist artist Paul Klee- known for his great use of color. He is also known for interesting images using fish shapes. Students will be presented with concepts of pattern, space, color, geometric shapes, and organic shapes.

4th Grade- We are discussing the Impressionist artists (Monet, Cassatt, Renoir....)- known for "capturing a moment" in their work. We are discussing how these artists understood how light impacts an object's color. Students will be working on a "seasonal tree" to create a work to reflect the "individual strokes" concept of these artists. Some terms they will become familiar with are composition, shape, and overlapping.
