Important News

POSTED: October 17, 2011

We have been lucky with the weather so far this fall and have been able to go outside quite a bit.  We have worked on Football, Soccer, a little bit of Volleyball when it seemed a bit too chilly out.  In the younger grades we have been working hard on our spacial awareness in order to move forward on more intense tag games.  Thankfully we have yet to have a head-head collision in neither kindergarten or pre-school classes.

I am excited to get into our basketball unit and see how our dribbling skills can improve in such short period of time.

Please be sure that your child is bringing proper "gym shoes" for running and jumping safely in P.E.

Baseball Game Tonight!

POSTED: May 24, 2010

Tonight should be an exciting night in the neighborhood.   Come out and support the Hi-C Hornets "A" Baseball team as they take on Nativity for the chance to play in the CAA Championship game.

Be sure to bring your water bottles because it's going to be a hot one. Good luck boys!

Mile Run Anyone?

POSTED: May 10, 2010

The middle-school students have been preparing themselves for this display of endurance by running/jogging 1/2 mile and 3/4 mile stretches.  We are talking about pacing ourselves, and not getting caught off guard by the addition of distance.

I am trying to stress that the time that they run in a mile run is a personal time.  I explain to them that in class when people get an "A" on a test they are more than willing to show it off to the rest of the class but those of us who didn't fair quite as well are a little more reserved with our score.

Often P.E. teachers or coaches send the students off with a traditional, "GO!" command.  Where the entire class takes off at the same time.   I have decided to try a different method where students are in groups of 3-4 friends that work from the same starting point situated on the course.  One of the students will start the stopwatch and the group will begin their journey.  Once they pass the cone for the 4th time they will get their time from the stopwatch and report it to me.

Some of us were born to be sprinters with quick bursts of speed and shorter legs, and some are more geared with the endurance and stamina essential to distance running.  My hope is that your children gain an appreciation for running and feel a certain amount of confidence brought on by doing something they previously thought was impossible or daunting.

Physical Education Update

POSTED: April 19, 2010

Hello to all of you P.E./Athletics Blog readers. I hope you are all doing well.

We have been having a difficult time getting outside with the weather not cooperating as usual. This week looks to be a great week to continue our unit on "Ultimate Sports". The upper level grades play Ultimate Tennis Ball while the lower grade levels play Ultimate Bean Bag. Both of these games are variations of Ultimate Frisbee. These games require teamwork and cooperation making them perfect for Hi-C P.E.

Spring Sports are in full swing now. Baseball and Softball teams are finally moving out of the gym and onto the fields. Our Track team has combined forces with St. Thomas More School to help with track rental costs. We have many girls and boys out for the teams and I hope everyone is enjoying spending time with their classmates in a setting outside of the classroom.

Have a wonderful week and I hope to blog to you about the great weather and wonderful time we are having in P.E.
