Important News
Reading: Right now, we're finishing up our Secret Garden unit, talking about how filmmakers and writers can tell the same story using different techniques. After that, the kids can expect to read one more novel in small groups before the year's out.
English: The students have been working at comparing their lives with the lives of Mongolians. They are writing essays telling which life and lifestyle they would prefer.
Science: We are working on a unit of experiments called Variables. It teaches how to set up a "standard" experiment and then to do experiments changing only one variable at a time to see which variables might change the outcome of the experiment.
Religion: We have finished the season of Lent and hopefully learned some new information and grew in our faith. We are in the fifty day season of Easter and will do some readings and reflection during this greatest season of the Church. We will be continuing in our religion textbook learning about some Old Testament prophets.
'Out of Harms Way' is a unit on personal safety that we will also be studying/discussing during the next few weeks.
Math: 6th graders are learning about percents. We have talked about a variety of strategies on how to find the percent of a number. In the next couple of weeks, we will be talking about real-world applications of percents. They will learn about markups, discounts, and simple interest. After percents we will begin a chapter on geometry.
Social Studies: We have started a unit on the Middle Ages. We’ll be learning about the forces that shaped Medieval Europe and eventually impacted much of the modern world. We’ll also be in the computer lab, designing blueprints for own castles!
