WELCOME 2011!

POSTED: January 06, 2011

Important Dates:

January 17  Martin Luther King Day - No School

January 24-28  Catholic Schools Week

Happy New Year!!  We hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful holiday season.  Thank you so much for the wonderful donations to our Families Moving Forward food drive.  Your generosity is truly appreciated.

Please check with your child about needing new school supplies - glue, pencil sharpeners, scissors, crayons/markers, and pencils.  Also, we start to get low on our supply of kleenex this time of year. It would be most helpful if you could send in an extra box or two.

Religion - We are learning that Jesus taught us how to love through His words and deeds; and that His teaching stresses that the surest sign of this love is caring about one's neighbor.

Math - We will continue to study the process of multiplication, explore patterns on a fact table, and learn different strategies to solve problems.  Multiplication facts are vital to your third grader's math program. The drilling of these facts is necessary to increase accuracy and then to increase speed.  These drills can be practiced with paper and pencil.  Oral drills can be very valuable by having students respond to flash cards. Keep a stack of 10 cards in the car and change these cards weekly; or spoken facts - do these while driving in the car, setting the table, etc...  Please see that your child studies these facts 10 to 15 minutes per day.  The ideal time for knowing each fact by memory is three to five seconds.

Reading - We are reading the chapter books "Stone Fox" and "100 Dresses". The skills we focus on, while enjoying these excellent stories, are sequencing, comprehension, dictionary skills and word study, problem solving, and making predictions.

English - We are learning about adjectives and how they can make a story more interesting.  It was fun journaling and sharing about our Christmas vacations!

Social Studies - "What Makes Our Community Diverse?" is the focus of our next unit.  We are learning that our country is a very diverse place.

Science - "The Human Body" is our new topic.  Watch for challenge questions for your third grader to think about each week.
