Hi lites week of April 15, 2010

Don't miss the teacher blogs, too!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I believe everyone is excited to be back together after our Easter break.  It sounds like students had some wonderful experiences during the time away from school.  Our faculty spent several days attending the National Catholic Education Associations Conference at the Mpls. Convention Center.  While there was some frustration about the lack of room at many of the sessions (always maddening), there is something powerful about having over 8,000 Catholic educators under one roof!  The liturgies were inspiring, our HCS Choir was delightful and it was fun to re-connect with so many excellent souls!

Readers Support Reading

The Used Book Sale conducted by the LCCC Women's Guild once again is donating a portion of the revenue to support our HCS library collection.  Thanks to everyone who donated books and treasures, the hard-working volunteers, co-chairs, Kelly deRosier and Jane Christensen, our hard working Scouts and to the folks who purchased some great new titles!  Read on!

Action in the HIVE

Thanks to Missy Gleason, who has agreed to help coordinate our strong corps of HIVE volunteers for the upcoming school year!  Yippee.  Did I mention that I haven't made a lunch since we've opened the HIVE?  It is a wonderful addition to our hot lunch program.  Special thanks to Molly Bachman and Donna Donahue for making this lunch option work for all of us.

Calling All Hands

We need many folks to help with spring cleanup around our campus.  Sandy Gross and Sue Kaufenberg will lead the charge on April 17th, 9 a.m. - Noon.  (Rain or snow date:  April 18th, 2-5 p.m.)  Volunteers need to bring gloves, a garbage bag and hand pruners, if they have them.  No gardening experience is necessary.  We will show you what needs to be done.

Summer Opportunities:

Don't forget to consider one of our HCS Summer Camps for your child this summer.

Also, materials are available in the office for those interested in Summer Extra Innings.  Summer Extra Innings is certainly a fun place to be during the long summer.  You might consider using the program just one day a week for a pool day and a chance to reconnect with school pals.  Contact Jennifer Seger, j.seger@highlandcatholic.org for more information.

The Minnesota Lynx in partnership with the St. Catherine University basketball coaching staff will be holding a basketball camp June 15th to the 18th at St. Catherine University. The camp is for girls who will be in the 5th through 8th grade in 2010-2011.

Congratulations to our former HCS students who were recognized by CDH as National Merit Commended Scholars: Jimmy Lynch, Maggie Vincent and Robert Kulhanek.  Nicely done!

How exciting to hear that alum, Jackie Kelly, has been accepted into the medical school at the University of Minnesota.  We aren't surprised!

What fun to note that two of our own were standouts at the last CDH baseball game. Christopher Keys scored big with a Grand Slam and Ben Ryan also homered!

A Chick, Chick Here...

Our kindergarten friends from St. Peter Claver came to visit today and spent time with our kinders and those darling little chickens!  It is always fun to have company.  Thanks to our librarian, who is also St. Peter Claver's librarian, Helen Stassen, for arranging this visit.

New policy in place

I had to write a new grooming policy this week.  "Students at Highland Catholic School must be clean shaven, no facial hair."  This will be known forthwith as the "Ben Weber Grooming Policy."

Art-minded

Wednesday, I had the pleasure of escorting 23 of our 7th graders to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.  The students spent an hour visiting many of the pieces they had most recently studied as part of our Art Adventure Program.  Joining us at the museum were Mrs. Kassy Kenney (our Art Adventure coordinator) and Mrs. Terry Jackson,  who had helped prepare the students.  Our docents were most impressed with the knowledge and behavior of our group.  Made me smile!  I was impressed by the large number of pieces throughout the galleries that the students recognized because of their years of participation in this great program.  It was like seeing old friends!  I would encourage any parent to spend time at the MIA with your child as your guide.  They know art!

Thanks to the exceptional parent volunteers that make this program a part of our school curriculum.
