Hi-lites week of Feb. 12th (Pretend Valentine's Day!)

 Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Tuesday, we had a chance to meet our new batch of kindergartners.  They already look like a gifted class.  I would like to thank our office staff, kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Katie Atlas and the league of volunteer parents who helped create such a warm welcome for our new students and their families. What a job well done!  I would like to give a special "shout out" to Mrs. Kathy Eldredge for her stellar work with our admissions.  She provides a wonderful first contact for our incoming families.

Yes, we do have openings in this class, so continue to spread the word.

Prayer Request

Please hold second grade teacher, Molly Nelson's family in your prayers at the death of her mother-in-law in Chicago this week.  Fortunately, the Nelson family, including Sam and Isaac, were able to be there for her passing.  May she rest in peace.

Spot on!

Highland Catholic School is advancing three students to the state- level of competition in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest.  Kudos to Gram O'Malley, Lizzie Odegaard and Frank Kajer for their excellent skills and nerves of steel!  We look forward to hearing about their continued success on the court.  Be wary, if they invite you to a game of "HORSE."

Film Production comes to HCS!

Four students, Martha Broadnax, Alissa Ellingson, Erin Roberge and Caoimhe Woodburn traveled to Dassel-Cokato Middle School on Thursday afternoon to pick up their trophy and DVDs of the top ten influenza prevention videos for Children's Hospital.  Their clever video, which placed 8th out of 43 entries, featured an original song and the use of our new "green screen" for video production.  The green screen was designed and sewn by our technology coordinator, Mrs. Katie Atlas.

You can view this ingenious video by clicking on the link on the technology blog under specialist blogs on our webpage, www.highlandcatholic.org.  Be warned, the catchy tune will stay with you for days!  Who says you can't have fun while battling a pandemic?  You can view their engraved trophy in the computer lab.

Goodies for Sale

Watch for the Lumen Christi Council of  Catholic Women's Bake Sale this weekend, Feb. 13-14, following Masses.  What an easy way to pick up a treat for your sweetie!

If you are a baker, you may drop off your goodies Saturday after Noon.  It would be helpful if treats were packaged on a small plate sealed with a baggie or cling wrap.  Proceeds go to Lumen Christi Catholic Community. Questions: contact Amy Murphy at 651-699-4019.

More Goodies...

Next Friday, students in second lunch may purchase Klondike bars and icecream sandwiches left over from our fun Bingo Night for $1.00.  Proceeds will be used to help fund the seventh grade trip to Concordia Language Camp in May.

We Love Books!

Helen Stassen, our librarian, and all classroom teachers extend their thanks for the support of our Catholic Schools Week Book Fair.  Weren't the titles lovely?  It takes an army of volunteers to coordinate that event.  Thanks to Mrs. Mary McNaney for orchestrating it for us.

Support Group Meets

The Parent Support Group for Parents with Children with Learning Differences will meet this upcoming Tuesday, February 16th, at 7:00 p.m. in our school library.  Discussion will include peer relationships and bullying.  This group is open to any interested HCS parent or guardian

Alumni News:  Catch Jimmy and Jack Lynch in Cretin-Derham Hall's upcoming production of King of Hearts.  You will also find Hannah Quicksell in the orchestra pit.  The show runs Feb. 12-14th and Feb. 19th-21st.  Sounds perfect for date-night!

I hope you have had a chance to view the 150 photos of our S.A.L.T. Day that can be found on our website.  You will enjoy seeing your own children and their classmates engaged in such novel topics as calligraphy, marble paper-making, etiquette class and more.  Check it out!
