Loads of Science Action:
Kindergartners are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby chicks. The eggs are cozy in the two classroom incubators at a steady 99 degrees and after 21 days we will have chicks! Thanks to our dear friend, Bob Kreitz, for making this happen for our students. What a miracle! The kinders are very excited to be mother hens!
At the other end, our 7h graders are busy dissecting frogs to further their knowledge of body systems. Teacher Abby Mallory spent time preparing students for what they would discover with textbooks and virtual models, but nothing compares to working with the real specimens. Did you know that frog thumbs can be used to determine gender?
This morning the entire building had that yummy smell of warm syrup, as our 4th graders enjoyed a breakfast served by teachers, Kathy Diffatte and Sara Skovholt. The students were enjoying the syrup from their previous day's fieldtrip to the Minnesota Arboretum. At the Arboretum they learned to identify the various maples, especially the sugar maple, tapped a tree and learned the entire syrup making process first hand. They were amazed to learn that it takes 86 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup. But, boy is it worth it!
Swing is Close at Hand
Don't forget to visit our Swing website, www.hicswing.com to order your tickets and check out all of the Swing action. Thanks to Mr. Boyd for scaling the heights and hanging this year's Swing banner on our Bohland side of the building. Tuesday, April 13th, all students will be photographed in baseball type-garb for a fun Swing project. Students may wear any type of jersey or t-shirt- team themed would be nice. Don't purchase anything special for this event. Yes, baseball caps are okay in school that day.
Some of you may have participated last year in the Highland Catholic Masters raffle, if so thanks for your support. This is a major fundraiser for the school and an unbelievable chance to have a Masters experience that you will never forget. We understand the recession has hit everyone, if $100 is too steep, consider splitting a chance with someone.
Here is the gig. For the past few years the school has held a Masters raffle and if you have any interest in this tournament, it is a great way to see Augusta for yourself. This is a trip that you would not fund on your own dime but for $100 you can have a shot at one great trip. This is also a significant fundraiser for the school.
Here are the high points:
* $100 entry (1 in 300 odds)
* Airfare for 4 from MSP to Augusta or equivalent $
* 2 nights top notch lodging in a house just down the street from the course
* In-house chef with great meals
* Beverages at the house
* Tent access at the event
* 2 days of event tickets
* Rental car
* A memory that will last a lifetime.
Two more Summer Nannies for Hire:
My name is Marisa Montelibano. I am currently a sophomore at UW-La Crosse. I'm a Hi-C and Cretin-Derham Hall graduate. I have lots of nanny and babysitting experience and would love a full time or part time nanny position for the summer. I also have a car and can transport. I'm currently studying abroad in Argentina and am fluent in Spanish. I will be back late May and do not return to school until late August.
See Mrs. Schmidt for further recommendations. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions! Marisa Montelibano Montelib.mari@students.uwlax.edu 651-353-3604
My name is Maggie Villaume and I am 19 years old. I love spending time with children and am on track for a Masters degree in Teaching Fine Arts at St. Mary's University in Winona, for kindergarten-12th grade. I'm available to Nanny from May 7th through the end of August, Monday-Friday anytime. I have a car of my own and would be willing to do any sort of transportation the family would need. I also have previous experience babysitting and the family would be available for reference. I'm always up for fun activities and taking the kids outside to play, whether going to the park or a fun field trip to the zoo. I can answer any questions either by my cell-phone: 651-278-7815, or e-mail: mxvill07@smumn.edu.
